Since the City of Las Vegas now requires that all pets over 4 months in age be spayed or neutered, I have had several people ask me if I know of any low cost options. Here is what I have found:

1.) VCA Rancho has a special going for the month of August and September for $250 for a spay/neuter.

2.) Town Center Animal Hospital charges $125 for a dog spay or neuter; $100 for a cat spay and $60 for a cat neuter. They also provide $10 each vaccinations with no exam fee. These are every day prices. http://towncentervet.web.officelive.com/default.aspx

3.) Spay & Neuter Center of Southern Nevada charges $45 for a cat neuter and $80 for a cat spay. Dog neuters run $75 to $105 based on the dog's weight (over 60 lbs - call for quote). Dog spays run $90 to $140 based on weight up to 60 lbs (over 60 lbs - call for quote). Vaccines are $12 each and require no appointment, however special hours do apply. http://spayneuterlv.com/custom_content/c...icing.html

4.) For Pit Bulls only - Heaven Can Wait Animal Society provide priority scheduling and low cost options for spay and neuter of pit bulls and pit bull mixes. http://www.hcws.org/its_the_pits.html

These are just a few of the resources that I have found. Please feel free to add any that you may know of.

I am also trying to get someone to provide microchipping at the Block Party this year. It seems that we have a large number of un-chipped and non-collared/identified pets and I am hoping if I make the act of microchipping so easy that all the neighbors have to do is show up with a check and a pet, we can put an end to the stream of never-ending lost/found pet cycle.

County and Community Partners Hosting “Cuide a Sus Perros y Gatos”

Clark County pet owners are invited to the “Cuide a Sus Perros y Gatos” (“Take Care of Your Dogs and Cats”) event, which will feature free rabies vaccinations and microchips for dogs and cats. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Escobedo Plaza at 750 N. Eastern Ave.

The event is a partnership between Clark County, the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, the El Mundo newspaper, local Univision radio stations La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, and RadioVariedades 870 AM, the Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, and the Lied Animal Shelter. We would especially like to thank El Mundo Publisher Eddie Escobedo for allowing us to use his plaza for this event.

In addition to the vaccinations and microchips, Heaven Can Wait will be taking appointments for spay-neuter procedures and various animal groups will be in attendance. Besides providing these important services for pets, the event is intended to bring additional attention to Clark County’s new spay-neuter ordinance.

Dog and cat owners in unincorporated Clark County have until May 19 to come into compliance with a new ordinance that requires pet owners to spay or neuter their pets.

The ordinance, intended to reduce pet over-population, mirrors pet sterilization laws in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. This means that when the County ordinance becomes effective, almost 9 out of 10 people across Southern Nevada will be required to have their pets spayed or neutered.

“Pet overpopulation forces our shelters to kill more than 30,000 cats and dogs every year,” said Clark County Chief Code Enforcement Officer Joe Boteilho, who is the county’s top animal control officer. “Only by getting our pets spayed or neutered can we end this senseless killing of animals.”

Generally speaking, this ordinance requires that dogs and cats four months old and older be spayed or neutered. Exemptions are allowed for those obtaining a pet fancier’s permit, breeders permit or a notarized letter from a veterinarian attesting to why an animal cannot be sterilized for a specific period of time, and for those with specially trained animals used by law enforcement agencies or service animals for people with special needs. The County Commission adopted the new rule in January and gave pet owners 120 days to comply.

To help low-income residents come into compliance, Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary, in partnership with the County, is offering free pet sterilizations for qualified residents of unincorporated Clark County. Services will be provided by appointment only to those who provide a photo ID, and an active and current TANF, NV Medicaid or SNAP card. To make an appointment contact Heaven Can Wait at (702) 227-5555.

Interested pet owners are encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible as the number of sterilizations that can be scheduled each week is limited by the availability of participating veterinarians. All cats are eligible for this program, but due to cost constraints only one dog per household is eligible for this assistance. (An owner can still pay to have any additional dogs they own sterilized.)

Pet owners who do not qualify for this program are reminded that Heaven Can Wait will also continue to offer pet sterilizations to all residents at their regular rate.

The new ordinance applies to the 900,000 residents of unincorporated Clark County. The cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Mesquite have adopted a similar rule, so about 1.75 million of the County’s 2 million residents (88 percent) will soon be covered by this requirement. (Henderson has about 250,000 residents and is currently working on a similar ordinance.)

With the recent rash of lost and found dogs and cats, I have uploaded some valuable information regarding the steps that you need to take if you find one. I have been working with several rescues in town regarding this problem. Thanks to those of you that have already opened your home to the lost pets and have worked to find their former home and/or new home. And as always, please SPAY/NEUTER, MICROCHIP and put a COLLAR with ID on your pets. It's the best and quickest way to ensure that you get reunited with them.

Lois Tarkanian spoke about this program at the May meeting in which you can get a free home energy audit paid for by the city. It takes about 3-4 hours and they run numerous tests to see where you are losing energy out of your home. You are provided a full report with suggestions on how to fix the problems as well as contractors that you can hire to do the work if you do not want to do it yourself. It takes about 3 weeks to get the report after the audit is done. Please see this link for more information:
or you can contact the auditors directly. I have attached the information for the team that did my house.

There are 4 dogs that have been found and we need to find their owners or find new homes for them. The no kill shelters and rescues in town are overloaded and are turning away animals. The KILL shelter, LIED AKA ANIMAL FOUNDATION, is overloaded as well.

The dogs are as follows:

An older female Cocker Spaniel that is hard of seeing. Signs for this missing dog was posted by the owners a while back so we know that someone is looking for her. No picture available for the website, however there are signs posted around the neighborhood with contact information of the neighbors that have her.

A very young female Cocker Spaniel, Chihuahua, and Terrier mix were found in Park Manor behind Costco. All had very tight collars on but no id. The neighbor that found the dogs has posted signs in that area, but has gotten no calls. If anyone is interested in adopting the Cocker Spaniel or the long haired Chihuahua (or both!) please contact me. Pictures are attached.

A reverse brindle Boxer is trapped in the backyard of the exploded house on Mason. She has been there since 2/28/10 when she escaped from 2 Animal Control officers. She seems very sweet, but scared and has a choke chain on, but again, no id (anyone see a pattern here?). I have contacted the property owner, who is out of town until tomorrow, and he is going to unlock the gate so I can gain access. I will probably have the dog until Monday and then will be taking her to rescue, so if you are interested contact me by Sunday morning. I am feeding and watering her twice a day in the meantime. Her picture is attached as well. I'm sure she will need to be spayed too.

The meeting was held today and the historical preservation commission decided to postpone the decision as to whether to grant historical designation status to this house until some further information on the property could be gathered. The owners were not present at the meeting nor were the current renters. The main premises of the request for historical landmark status was that the house has the deepest pool in Nevada and was also the residence of Dr. Kirk Vern Cammack, a prominent trauma surgeon and husband of Babette Salon, a member of the singing group the De Castro Sisters.

During the meeting of the commission, it was brought to light by McNeil residents that the pool has been empty for some time, there are several large, dead trees in the back yard that are in danger of falling and the house is reported to be in foreclosure.
